The Forty Percent

Nearly 40% of GA4 properties have misconfigured events compromising their data.

Everyone is layering AI analytics on top of GA4 right now. Gemini Insights. Looker summaries. LLM anomaly detection. All of it reads the same broken foundation.

AI on corrupted tracking doesn't give you bad answers.

It gives you confident bad answers.

The most common error: enhanced measurement and GTM both tracking the same events. One checkbox, one tag, every pageview counted twice. GA4's setup assistant shows a green checkmark. The checkmark means GA4 received data. It does not mean the data is right.

If you've suspected your GA4 numbers are off but couldn't pin it down, duplicate event firing accounts for most of it.

The second killer is internal traffic. GA4's internal filter lives in data stream settings, separate from GTM. Most teams configure GTM and miss the GA4 step. Your own team inflates conversion events daily and it reads as organic demand.

The problem with confident wrong answers is that nobody investigates them.

Revenue up 12%? Gets celebrated.

Revenue down 12%? Gets a postmortem. The misconfigured properties almost always show the first kind.

Open GA4, go to Admin, then Diagnostics. Check for event counts that doubled in the last 30 days.

Fix duplicates first.
